We all have our favorite and must-have items for the dance season. While we would love for you to stock up at Forté, there are just some items that aren’t specifically for dance but are important for dancers to have on hand.
Check out our list of favorite items we don’t leave home without. These are our must-haves for you and your dancer this year and are available from Amazon.
LED Mirror
This is the best portable mirror we have found. The tri-fold design means it’s large enough to stand up on its own but easily folds down to fit into your bag. This mirror is battery-operated or can be plugged into a power source with the USB cable. The lights are super bright and even has different magnification levels.
Silk Robe
The perfect item to slip on in between costume changes. Silk kimomo style robe is lightweight and soft. Its also a great item to have to protect costumes when doing hair and make up. Comes in both youth and adult sizes with tons of fun colors to choose from. Make it special by adding an embroidered monogram or name to the front. A great gift idea!
Hair Wax Stick
Get the best slick-back style with this wax stick by SNTE. It’s great for taming flyaways and lasts all day. It comes in a small tube that can easily fit inside cosmetics bags or travel cases.
Topsy Tail Hair Tool
Did you know this tool is the absolute best way to wrap hair? Yes, this was one of those “As Seen on TV” products from the 90s. No bobby pins are needed when you use the topsy tail to create a smooth and tight hair wrap around any size ponytail. This set is great because it includes two different sizes plus the best comb for parting hair.
Reusable Covers
Nippies brand reusable covers are one of our favorite stickies to use when the dancewear isn’t bra-friendly. This brand is a tacky silicone but is not sticky and holds all day long. They are reusable and can be rinsed with gentle soap and water. They come in different skin tone shades and different sizes to create a seamless look.
Disclaimer: if you are looking for support, this may not be the best option. These are great for coverage but will not be super supportive inside a looser-fitting costume or dance top. A tape like this may be a good alternative.
Body and Costume Glue
Also known as “butt glue”, this is the stuff to help costumes stay in place. It is a roll-on adhesive to apply onto the body before placing the costume where it needs to be. Works best on rear ends but can also work on shoulders, back, or chest if the costume has enough give to stick. This product is great and comes off best with baby oil or an oil-based makeup remover.
Pro tip: don’t wait to take it off! Remove immediately after it’s needed to avoid sticking to anything else or skin irritation.
Travel Sewing Kit
This travel-size sewing kit is one that you hope you won’t need but is always a great idea to have in your bag. It includes absolutely everything in one super convenient zipper pouch.
Magnetic Battery Pack
A portable charger is a must-have for long days. If you have an iPhone, this is my absolute favorite. It’s wireless, magnetic, and charges quickly. No need to remember cables or scramble to find an outlet. Small size to easily fit into a belt bag or purse to keep with you at all times.
NonScents Deodorizers
Does anyone else despise the smell of dance shoes? This is one way to help neutralize odors. Drop one of these odor-absorbing bean-bag style sticks into shoes or in the bottom of a backpack or suitcase. I will warn that they leave behind a very strong chlorinated swimming pool scent but to me, that is a much less offensive smell than the alternative. In our experience, they last about 6 months.
V8 Energy Drink
Energy drinks are all the rage these days and there are so many to choose from! I have a hard time letting my tween and teen take in some of these brands but this is one I feel good about. Yes, V8 is best known as a tomato juice brand but these are a mix of fruit juice and other natural ingredients. My girls also don’t do carbonation so this is a good option that tastes like fruit juice but gives them a little pick me up. The 8 oz cans are a manageable size to drink when they are on the go from one thing to the next.
Liquid IV Electrolyte Powder
Keeping dancers hydrated is so important! I’m a fan of the sugar-free Liquid IV packets. I keep these on hand to drop into a bottle of water. I’ve tried a lot of different ones and this specific zero-sugar mix seems to be the best mix of flavors and nutrients without a lot of the unnecessary extras. Pro tip: don’t wait until your dancer feels thirsty. Start the day with one or make a bottle in advance to supplement their regular water throughout the day. Good for you too, not just for sweaty athletes!
